Lesson #4 My Sketch-Book/Bible Journal

I have greatly enjoyed my new Bible journaling adventure. When I first started I was using a basic sketch journal because I didn't want to write or mark in my nice Sunday morning Bible. I figured this would be an easy hobby for me to get into since I am creative and some what artistic.

Cover of my sketch journal. Esther 4:14
My church started a class on Monday nights where anyone can come and journal together. The leader picks a verse, but if you have something else on your heart you may work on that. The first week the scripture was Roman 8:11 "The spirit of God who raised Jesus from the dead live in me". I was confident I was going to leave class with an awesome piece of artwork; however, I'm not proud of how my skills failed me that night.

I tried to do way to many things in one picture that I wasn't used to working with. I used calligraphy pens, stickers, traced letters, and water-colored. My calligraphy didn't turn out how I wanted so I decided I would paint the background. Well it turns out calligraphy pens aren't water resistant, but I had already paint around the border so I tried going around the words. I should have stopped and started a new one, but I was set on fixing this. The word 'spirit' was originally in stickers, but after I painted over it I thought it might look cool if I took the stickers off. I still like the concept, but because of the light colored paint I used it all started to blend together.

The next week at class I decided I was going to take a different route. I looked up an idea on Pinterest and did my best to copy it. I didn't purposely change anything I wanted mine to look just like theirs. Our scripture this week was Pslam 91:4 "He will cover you with His feathers and under His wings you will find refuge".

Wow, it doesn't even look like the same person drew those two pictures. Crazy.
The next couple weeks went pretty smooth, I looked up ideas and then copied or changed a few things and drew my own version.

Advice #1 If you are first starting your Bible journal, don't try to mix multiple medias and do fancy calligraphy if you have never done it before.
Advice #2 Don't be afraid to look up ideas and see what others have done. Once you are more comfortable with journaling you can look at those for inspiration and then personalize them. Later on you may feel confident enough to come up with an idea from scratch.
Advice #3 If you have a bad week or month and are losing motivation and feeling like you can't do it. Take a break, but don't give up. I have gone a few weeks without touching my journaling and sometimes that's what I need.

Lesson #5 The Erratic Escape

Back in May my parents purchased us an outdoor kennel (size 5 x 10; plenty of room for two little beagles) as a graduation present for me. We were super excited to use it since the dogs wouldn't have to be caged up when we were gone for long periods of time.  Not to long after we installed it BO had surgery to get his manly hood taken away (this is important later). One beautiful Saturday, four days after his surgery, my husband agreed to go to town and do errands with me; which he absolutely hates doing on weekends. Before we left we put BO in his cage inside the house with his little plastic cone on his head to prevent him from licking his incisions. We didn't want him together with Daisy because we didn't want her licking him; so she went in the outside kennel.  We just had one last stop to make at home of economy to look at a dog igloo to go in their kennel for extra shelter and privacy. While walking into the store we notice the sky was quickly getting dark an...

Lesson #2 Independence Day Decorating

I love holidays and decorating for holidays; be that as it may, I am to much of a procrastinator to actually get decorations up before the holiday gets here. Unless it's Christmas, since I normally decorate for that around Thanksgiving. My plans for the 4th of July this year were big - for every decoration I was making for myself I was going to make another one to sell. Hmmm well since the fourth is only six days away I would say I'm not doing very good. I did get one project complete and I started another one yesterday My complete project is my holiday coasters. I made these last year for Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day; last years coasters were not good quality at all so I tried something different this year and I like them a lot more. Materials:  Plain white kitchen/bathroom tiles. I got mine at home depot because of the military discount. There are like fifty cents a piece Mod Podge (Glossy or Matte) Something to smooth the Mod Podge with (old c...

Pinterest Fail #1 - Wine Bottle Painting

I mentioned in my last post that I was working on another Independence Day decoration. I still haven't completely finished it, but I'm close enough. The idea with this project is to paint wine bottles (or sparkling grape juice bottles in my case), to resemble the American flag. Pinterest Idea: Of course, I couldn't find a blog or website that actually told me how they made this; so I took it into my own hands. I already had the bottles and was feeling confident that painting them wasn't going to be an issue.  I don't have a picture of the bottle before painting, but I'm just going to assume you have seen a glass bottle. Okay, moving on. While I was at my dad's house this weekend I grabbed some wooden dowels (pictured above), this made painting the bottles fairly easy; you get better coverage and you don't have to be careful where you set it while it's drying. Speaking of the paint, I used regular white spray paint that I got from Menard...
